Kia ora! Welcome back!
We have been straight into it in Room 5 this week with lots of exciting learning. First, a welcome to Emily Vincent who has joined us in Room 5 and has settled in extremely well for her first week. So well, in fact, that she got the Student of the Week award! Congratulations Emily.
This week we were learning the poem 'Little Miss Muffet' so there was a lot of talk of spiders and the like. As it was Primary Science Week, Mrs Lawson showed us how curds and whey were made and we all had a go at it. It was fascinating stuff! We couldn't let the milk boil or it wouldn't work.
Most of us tried the curd, it was a lot like ricotta cheese from Italy.
We also read the book 'Too Big For Me' which was about a little spider that narrowly escapes getting eaten by a bird. We all had a go at making a spider out of fur and pipe cleaners.
This week the Monkeys group read 'Sam's Mask' and decided to have a go at making some themselves. Check them (and the spiders) out on the individual work pages. Scary!
Below is a copy of our 'Back to School' notice that went home at the beginning of the week just in case you missed it. Have a wonderful term everybody and remember to check back in for regular updates.
Kia ora/Welcome
We hope you all had a nice and relaxing holiday! We know we did and are ready to get back into an exciting term 2! This term will be very busy with reporting to parents and our school concert. Watch this space for more information later on. We are starting off the term with a unit around Keeping Well. Then we will be doing a Traditional Tales/Nursery Rhyme Inquiry Unit.
A few reminders and information for new Whanau in our classroom:
Morning Routines
When the children arrive at school they need to: put their lunch boxes in their tote trays, put some morning tea into the pink box, place their book bags into the red box on the table, write their name on the required card and hang up their bags.
Reading
Your child will bring home a book every night in a book bag. This needs to be brought back to school every day. Please take some time to listen to them read. If you run out of time, encourage them to read it to a brother, sister, themselves or maybe even a teddy (they listen really well). Encourage them to look at the initial letter of a word and get their mouth ready. They are to use 1 to 1 finger pointing. Please sign their notebook to show you have listened to them read. Feel free to add a comment. Also each child has a blue letter and sound book. They are to name the letter, say the sound the letter makes and say a word starting with that letter. Some children are bringing home blend books too.
Poem books / Publishing book.
Each Friday there will be a new poem glued in the children’s book and a new published story. These books are for shared reading over the weekend.
Sharing/News
On Monday and Thursday mornings the children will be sharing with a partner and with the class. Please can you help with this by talking about activities your child and family members/friends have undertaken. On Tuesday we will have a describing activity and on Wednesday we will be doing a thinking skill activity.
Computers
The class will be using the computers twice a week. They will be involved in a variety of maths and language activities, kidpix and using pages to publish stories. (keyboard skills).
Maths
This term we are focussing on numbers to 50/100. Counting, reading, ordering, before and after numbers and joining sets to 20. Please encourage any extra number work at home. We will also be looking at Geometry and Measurement this term too.
Physical Education
The main focus for the term is ball skills in minor games. Also in week 5, the school cross country will take place. Therefore we will be doing some training for this too.
The Arts
Our focus for the term is painting and drama. We are going to be looking at the impressionist, Monet. If you have any skills or resources in these fields feel free to come and see us.
We hold a whole school assembly every second Thursday from 2.25 to 2.55, where learning is shared, certificates are presented to students.
Please remember, we welcome you into the classroom anytime. You are your child’s first teacher and you know them very well. Please feel free to come and talk to us anytime, even if you feel it is trivial.
Many Thanks
Jane Lawson / Victoria Taylor
