This week was a busy one with some exciting cooking going on! Mrs. Lawson got stuck in with some cupcake making! It was especially fun when it came to decorating them. We had to concentrate hard when it came to spreading the tricky icing, but it was worth it in the end. Our friends from the senior school helped, so did our friend Aimee. Thanks friends! We spent a lot of time describing them and writing about them during the week, but the best bit by far was eating them. They were super yummy! Check out our individual pages for us decorating our own cakes.
Congratulations to Emily for receiving Pupil of the Week this week. Emily is always concentrating in class and is an excellent role model for new students learning the ways of school. Well done, Emily. You are our superstar!
Nau mai haere mai ki Ako Tahi. Welcome to Ako Tahi's blog. We are a Year 0-1 class at Victory Primary School in Nelson. We love to leave pictures and information for you to see what we have been up to here, so come and have a look!

Week 7, Term 2
Congratulations to Bayley for receiving Pupil of the Week this week. Bayley has been working hard since he started school earlier this month. He has been learning what it takes to be a school boy and has been brave when it's his turn to speak on the mat. Well done, Bayley! We are proud of you.
This week we held our school and community Matariki celebrations. We had our lanterns and headbands finished in time for the show. Some senior students put on a great show of the story of Maui and Mahuika the Fire Goddess which we all got to sing in and enjoyed watching. The show was followed by the community walk up the Railway Reserve into the night, returning to the community centre for more performances and some kai. Check out our individual pages for photos of us with our lanterns and headbands on.
There has been quite a few winter ills and gripes around lately. We have been doing work in our Health topic on washing hands and keeping germs at bay. We encourage the children to wash their hands carefully regularly throughout the day and especially after toileting or sneezing. We also teach them to sneeze or cough into their elbow or arm rather than their hands to prevent the spread of bugs. We hope this is keeping most of the germy germs contained.
On that note, have a good week everyone!

Week 6, Term 2
It's Tadpole time!!
Yes it's that time of the year again and we have a big thank you to Rhys and his dad, Mark for bringing us some extra friends in Room 5. We have three tadpoles living in our classroom now and we are excited to see how they will grow and change. We have been feeding them fish food that Rhys bought in but we were wondering what else they might eat? We have started an inquiry into what other things tadpoles might need. Keep checking in for more information and pictures of their changes.
Pupil of the Week
Congratulations to Tane for receiving Pupil of the Week this week. Tane has settled in well at school and is proving he can get down to serious business when it comes to working hard! Well done, Tane.

Week 5, Term 2
3-Way Conferences
Thank you for all the parents who made it to the 3-Way Conferences earlier this week. It was lovely to meet those we hadn't met before and to catch up with those we have. Every child had a chance to share with you what we have been doing so far this year. This is a special and important time for children to showcase their work and really helps them 'own' it. We hope this gives the things they do at school more meaning and relevance. Any feedback you have about the sessions would be greatly appreciated so feel free to drop in or drop us a line:

Cross Country
This Thursday we had some amazing runners in the cross country. We ran and ran as fast as we could. We had a beautiful day for it and everyone was primed for action! Congratulations to all our super stars from Room 5 who gave it their best and thank you to all the parents who came to cheer us on.
Matariki Celebration
We are getting ready for our Matariki celebrations next week. We have started making lanterns for the walk in the dark by making papermache balloons. We used paste and squares of white tissue paper to cover our balloons. When they are dry we will decorate them and pop the balloons! Yippee!
Have a look at us all having a go on our own individual work pages.
Next Wednesday the whole school takes part in the Matariki celebration and performances after school. Children will stay at school until the performance in the hall finishes around 4.30pm. After this everyone is welcome to join in the walk up the Railway Reserve behind the school as part of the Victory community Matariki celebration. There will be entertainment and a hangi. Bring warm clothes as it can be cold. Looking forward to seeing you there!
