Term 2

Welcome back! It has been a FUNtastic few weeks back. I hope you all enjoyed your holidays. It has been exciting to hear all about the adventures people have been on during the break. Some of us have had lots of fun enjoying the sun in Nelson, while others went further afield and even on planes! They are mostly a distant memory now as we are well into the term and working hard at our maths, reading and writing, among other important things!

We have a new friend in Room 5. Welcome to Samuel and his family. We are already loving getting to know you Samuel, and look forward to learning with you.

Last week was Primary Science Week and although we were not graced with a visit from Mr Science (we had so many last term) we tried a hand at being scientists on our own.

We looked at the changes water undergoes when it is frozen and again when it thaws. We made ice cubes and added colour to them to see what happens when they melt. We also read a book about it.
One of the things we had to do was watch carefully or observe and take a record. We talked about our findings and took turns to photograph the results.

We noticed that the colours melted and when mixed made a dark green coloured water. We thought this was probably because there were mostly blue and yellow ice cubes. The red one didn't really come out very red. Maybe not enough red food colouring. Klara thought that the ice cubes would melt faster out in the sun. We wondered if she would have been right. We will try the experiment again another day and see.

Lately in maths we have been working hard on solving problems using our maths knowledge. We made some farms and put different animals in the paddocks. We had to say how many animals were in each paddock and how many were on the farm altogether. It took a lot of thinking and planning and problem solving and we had to use co-operation and counting skills.

This week we are continuing to work on our problem solving as well as number knowledge. In PE at the moment we are practicing throwing and running for the cross country coming up soon and in art we are learning about painting. Phew! We are so busy in Room 5! Do take the time to come in and see our work.

Have a happy and safe week everyone. Ka kite.
