Welcome to Room 5 2012!

Hello and welcome to Room 5's blog for 2012. Welcome back to those returning and welcome to those new friends just joining us.
There are a few changes set for Room 5 this year. Mrs Lawson is in Room 1 with Miss Tobin and so we will have to make regular trips to visit her there!
The classroom has changed its look a bit so you oldies might notice a few things in different places. We have had a good explore around in the first few days, and also around the school as there are new and wonderful things happening all over the place! The new library is nearly ready and there is more building going on outside Room 1. Be sure to keep checking in on the developments.

Here's who has come back to Room 5 for 2012. Welcome back old friends!

This is Anup.
This is Rehara.
This is Klara (holding Clarence, who we'll talk about later).

This is Duh Duh.
This is Wiremu.

This is Sarah.
This is Elly.

This is SiuMelie.

This week in Room 5 we met our new friend Ryan. Welcome Ryan!

We are all looking forward to getting to know you, Ryan.

We also have a new friend Clarence the Bear, who has come to live in Room 5. He is very friendly and not growly and if you pop into Room 5 you will be sure to meet him. He just loves it in Room 5 and is very good at taking care of all our new friends. He gets a bit lonely in the weekends though, so he may come for a sleepover at your house sometimes. Don't worry, he is toilet trained and brings his own backpack with activities to keep himself busy.

We have some big buddies this year all the way from Room 13. They will be coming on Fridays to play some games with us and to teach us new things. This week we worked together to make a fantail out of a book we have read. Thanks Big Buddies. We are looking forward to next week.

I just know we're going to have a great year and do lots of fun, fabulous learning. Check in here regularly to see what we have been up to and of course, come in to Room 5 to see our work in real life!
Parents here is a copy of the newsletter in case you need to check any information. If you have any queries at all, please do not hesitate to come in and chat, or send me an email, vic_taylor@hotmail.com

Welcome to Room 5

Kia ora and a very warm welcome to Room 5 children and your families.
I hope you have all had a fun-filled and restful summer break and are ready for the busy school year. I am looking forward to hearing about the exciting adventures you have had during the summer.
Some returning children and families are already familiar with our routines (although there have been some changes) but I have included some information and guidelines for everyone.
Jane Lawson is joining Rachel Tobin in Room 1 this year and so there will only be myself in Room 5 for the year. Wendy Taylor (the deputy principal) will be taking my release at times throughout the year.

Morning Routines
When the children arrive at school they are to put their morning tea in the tray in the cupboard, their drink bottle in the tray, and their lunchboxes on the shelf. They hang their bag on their hook. It is best if it is zipped up. They empty their bookbags putting the books in the right places then put their bookbag in their group box. They read their reader from the night before and put it in their browsing box. Once they have finished they can write their name on the board and play outside or choose an activity. We encourage children to perform these tasks themselves to foster independence.

Reading
Your child will bring home a book every night. This needs to be brought back to school every day. Please take time to listen to them read or to read with them. There will sometimes be a bookmark to inform you of the reading expectations. This needs to be returned also. If you run out of time, encourage them to read to a family member, themselves, or even a teddy (they listen really well). Be patient and encouraging with their reading. Give your children time (up to around 10 seconds) to think about a word. Praise, praise, praise. Please write the name of the book and sign it in the notebook. Some children will also have blue letter or blend books. They are to name the letter, say the sound, and a word.

Poem Books
These will come home every Friday along with some published writing in a book. There are for your child to share with you but we do not expect them to be able to read them every time. Please read them with your child.

Assembly
We hold a whole school assembly every second Thursday from 2.25 to 2.55 where learning is shared and successes celebrated.

Swimming
a pair of goggles they can bring these also. Please ensure every item is clearly named.

Parent help
If you are interested in helping in the classroom we would greatly appreciate help with reading and maths. Please let me know so I can arrange a schedule.

I look forward to teaching your child this year. Please do not hesitate to contact me should you have anything you wish to discuss.

Victoria Richardson.
